Romee Strijd didn't recognise designers at first casting
Romee Strijd didn't recognise any of the designers at her first model castings.
The Dutch model was selected to be one of the newcomers at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2014 and was promoted to a Victoria's Secret Angel for the American lingerie brand the following year.
While the 21-year-old has had a fast pathway to success, she reveals she rejected the idea of modelling when she was first approached by a talent scout in Amsterdam as a teenager.
But she later changed her mind and before long was attending fashion week castings in New York, where she didn't clock most of the industry faces.
"My mum would WhatsApp me a picture of each designer's face just before I walked into the room, so I'd know when I was speaking to Marc Jacobs or whoever," she told The Edit. "I would have had no idea otherwise!"
Now New York-based Romee has embraced the fashion world and loves to wear trendy designer garments. But she admits that some of her ensembles shock her friends and family when she returns to Holland.
"A few years ago, I was wearing those Isabel Marant stacked-heel sneakers and all my friends were like, 'Where did you get those monsters!?'" she laughed, adding there are versions of the same style in every store. "Everything comes here a little bit late."
When it comes to her career, Romee also revealed that fellow Victoria's Secret star Doutzen Kroes is a major influence on her. Doutzen hung up her Victoria's Secret Angel wings around the time that Romee signed to the brand, and gave her plenty of helpful advice.
"She told me to stay cool and try to enjoy it all. Doutzen is a real inspiration, but I think everybody has to approach modelling their own way," she smiled.
