Painters spill Fuel Masters, solidify hold of No. 2 spot

MANILA, Philippines — Rain or Shine tightened their grip of the second spot at the expense of Phoenix, 97-82, in Sunday's PBA action at the Big Dome.

The E-Painters let the Fuel Masters lead only once — when the scoreboard read 2-0. 

Maverick Ahanmisi, Don Trollano, and Jeffrei Chan combined for 12 early points in succession before Fuel Masters were able to answer back. But that has been the story the duration of the game, as the Painters — with the comfortable lead — never looked back.

"We had to start the new year right," Rain or Shine head coach Caloy Garcia said. "Ronnie Mattias and Don Trollano stepped up today. Hopefully against San Miguel we can come out stronger and be more consistent."

"Our last game was December 23, and we played after two weeks. The nice thing about today, the players came back in shape," he shared.

The E-Painters missed the services of Gabe Norwood, and Raymond Almazan due to injuries.

For their part, the Fuel Masters were move within one at 38-39 behind the production of Matthew Wright. But the rookie's efforts weren't enough to put his team ahead in the game.

With the win, Rain or Shine now boasts a 5-2 card. Phoenix, on the other had, despite having suffered two embarrassing blowouts, joins Blackwater with a 4-4 record.
