MANILA, Philippines — When UNTV’s staff from the talk show, Get it Straight with Daniel Razon, arrived at the housing site Lake Breeze Residences in Brgy. Looc Calamba Laguna, they were greeted by what seemed like a ghost town.

In the complaint received by the group, the site of the public housing units for government troopers no longer looks like a community as many of the houses remain unoccupied.

Based on the figures of the National Housing Authority (NHA), of the more than 2-thousand units built in the Lake Breeze Residences, only 421 are occupied.

The NHA said they experienced problems when the supposed beneficiaries of the houses backed out.

“One of the downsides is that some of those who have expressed interest and signed in the master’s list have withdrawn,” NHA spokesperson Elsie Trinidad said.

The agency explained that before implementing a housing project, there should be a complete list of interested parties whom the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP) Housing Board will award the houses to.

With this, a contract will be signed with a developer. It will serve as proof that a site has been chosen for a housing unit based on the submitted list. Only then can the NHA enter for the financing of the project.

After the AFP and PNP Housing Board submit the approved master list of beneficiaries, the NHA will begin construction.

NHA’s loan documentation only happens before or when the beneficiary already occupies the government housing unit.

With this, the NHA argued that once the AFP and PNP submit the list of beneficiaries, they assume that it has already been thoroughly assessed.

“The AFP PNP Housing Board manages the application form thru the employees housing. There is such a process but the accountability is left to the AFP PNP Housing Board,” Trinidad said.

However, the PNP said it could not force the awardees to occupy the housing units as they have valid reasons to reject the offer.

“They have not seen yet the actual model of the housing unit. So after seeing it, the construction is not good, while others have already been transferred. Actually before, they were allowed to back out because they have their own reasons,” PNP Engineering Services PSSupt. Ruben Mendoza said.

“When we conducted an inspection, we saw some deficiencies in the housing site, the project site. There are no electricity and water yet, so how can they live in that area which lacks the necessary facilities,” he added.

The Lake Breeze Residences is just one of the housing projects of the government wherein many of its beneficiaries do not want to occupy because of various problems. – June Soriao | UNTV News & Rescue
