Philippines, Cambodia ink 4 cooperation agreements during Duterte’s state visit
Philippine foreign minister Perfecto Yasay shakes hand with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen during the signing of bilateral agreements at Peace Palace in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016.
Four memoranda of agreement have been signed on Wednesday between the governments of the Philippines and Cambodia during President Rodrigo Duterte’s bilateral meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
One of which is the Implementing Program of Tourism Cooperation 2016 to 2020.
This aims to add direct flights particularly from Phnom Penh, Cambodia to the Philippines to bring about more Cambodian visitors in the Philippines.
“And because of this, if we have direct flight, I’m sure that tourists, the arrivals of Cambodian people to the Philippines will increase because right now what we have is only around 2,000 to 3,000 a year,” said Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo.
During President Duterte’s visit, the Cambodian government showed him the value of their country’s bilateral relation with the Philippines.
On the other hand, the Philippine delegation thanked the Cambodian government for their effort to change President Duterte’s working visit to a full-state visit.
“And so we’re very grateful for that and we had requested only for a working visit in coming over to Cambodia but the government had elevated it to a full state visit.
So again this is one of the significant features of the visit of the president here in Cambodia,” said Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay.
Pres. Duterte had been busy during his short visit to the country, where he was welcomed with a grand arrival ceremony by Cambodian high officials.
He also held a bilateral meeting with Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihamoni and attended a wreath laying ceremony at the Independence Monument and at the King-Father of Cambodia monument.
The rest of Pres. Duterte’s schedule included expanded bilateral meeting, signing of agreements and a courtesy call to the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce. — Leslie Longboen | UNTV News and Rescue
