MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine government is likely to ban the deployment of Filipino household service workers to countries where there are overseas Filipino workers on death row.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said the government might resort to the “drastic move” of imposing a ban if another Filipino worker is executed.

There are Filipino workers on death row in Dubai, Kuwait and Oman.

Bello said he met with local and foreign recruitment agencies last week to discuss the situation of Filipinos on death row.

“I appealed to them that they should do everything within their means to prevent the execution of our countryman because if that happens, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) may be compelled to take a very drastic move and that is possibly to ban deployment of our Filipino workers in areas where execution has been consummated,” Bello said in an interview.

Bello also asked local recruitment agencies to talk with their foreign counterparts to assist the Philippines in convincing their government officials not to execute OFWs on death row.

“We appealed to convince their government officials to just jail the Filipino workers if they are really guilty and not to execute them,” he said.

The DOLE is now monitoring the case of Filipino domestic helper Jennifer Dalquez, who was sentenced to death in 2014 for allegedly killing her employer in Dubai.

Bello will visit Dalquez in Dubai to personally check on her condition and the status of her case, which is on appeal.
