Only Duterte can stop STL – PCSO
MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) will continue operations of the Small Town Lottery (STL) even if Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez considers it illegal.
“We will stop STL when the President tells us to stop,” PCSO general manager Alexander Balutan said in a text to The STAR.
He added that although the office respects Alvarez’s opinion, it is also asking him to reconsider, as stopping STL would only favor gambling lords and their cohorts.
In yesterday’s hearing of the House games and amusement committee, Alvarez told the PCSO to stop operating STL because it does not have the authority to run the numbers game aimed at countering illegal gambling activities like jueteng.
“You should stop it unless you want to be charged before the ombudsman for doing things that you are not authorized to do. We are telling you that it is not within your charter to operate STL… What you are doing is illegal,” Alvarez said in Filipino.
Balutan said the PCSO gets its guidance from President Duterte, who is clear in his intent to rid the country of illegal gambling. – With Delon Porcalla, Evelyn Macairan
