KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines — The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency started prosecuting Friday a senior member of a large drug trafficking syndicate who was arrested here two days before.
John Ryan Alvarez, long wanted for large-scale distribution of methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu), was submitted on Friday by his PDEA-12 custodians for inquest by a state prosecutor.
The 29-year-old Alvarez is known in Kidapawan City, the capital of North Cotabato, as one of six people overseeing the local “Simbulan” shabu triad.
The syndicate distributes shabu to contacts in the 40 barangays here and in the neighboring North Cotabato, Davao del Sur and Maguindanao provinces.
Gil Castro, director of PDEA for Region 12, said on Friday that Alvarez fell Wednesday in a drug sting laid by agents with the help of local officials and vigilant neighbors privy to his shabu peddling activities.
“He is in our list of most wanted drug traffickers in the region,” Castro said.

PDEA-12 agents neutralized in recent months more than a dozen large drug syndicates in central Mindanao, among them members of the Ansa’r Al-Khilafa, which boasts of allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
Castro said the PDEA-12 is thankful to the vigilant Kidapawan City residents who helped locate Alvarez, enabling agents to promptly plan an operation that resulted in his arrest.
Alvarez was escorted to the provincial prosecutor office on Friday by PDEA-12 agents for an inquest for violation of the Republic Act 9165, which prohibits sale and possession of narcotics.
