House Speaker defers endorsement of impeachment complaint vs. CJ Sereno
MANILA, Philippines — House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez said Congress can now endorse the impeachment complaints against the chief justice of the Supreme Court, Maria Lourdes Sereno.
Alvarez noted 200 congressmen have already expressed willingness to endorse the complaint but that he only hindered it.
According to the lawmaker, the House leadership wants the complaints to undergo scrutiny to ensure it has merit and sufficient evidence before bringing it to the Senate which serves as the impeachment court.
“Once we all sign the complaint and get the minimum number of congressmen, it will then go the impeachment court. So, what then? We will be forced to prosecute without strong evidence. I don’t want for us to look stupid at the impeachment court,” Alvarez said.
He also confirmed that the Congress will first discuss the complaint against Sereno before the impeachment rap against Comelec chairman Andres Bautista.
Alvarez believes the case against Sereno is strong because it has certified true copies supporting the allegations.
“What I have heard is that, there are justices that will testify. That’s heavy,” he added.
The House committee might simultaneously hear the impeachment complaints filed against the Supreme Court chief justice.
House Committee on Justice chairman, Representative Rey Umali said, “We will hear both, in the preparation of the articles of impeachment assuming we will find probable cause and after determination of sufficiency in form and substance, then we will consolidate and incorporate and file a single articles of impeachment.”
Sereno is facing two impeachment complaints over her alleged misdeclaration of her real wealth in her Statement of Assets Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN), and for her alleged questionable use of the Supreme Court’s funds.
Meanwhile, the chief justice has yet to release new comments regarding the complaints since its formal filing before the House of the Representatives. — Grace Casin | UNTV News & Rescue
