BOC seizes firearms to be delivered to Hong Kong and Vietnam

PASAY CITY — The Bureau of Customs (BOC) is set to turn over to the Philippine National Police (PNP) the firearms seized from Thomas Nationwide Transportation Warehouse in Pasay City on May 4.

A 9mm pistol and a .45 caliber pistol were found inside a box of a water heater which were about to be delivered to Hong Kong and Vietnam.

The boxes were under the names of Christopher Yeung from Hong Kong and a certain Lau in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Last May 10, a certain Alfonso Martin V. Sanchez went to the BOC to retract the shipment.

“Binabawi niya iyong dalawang shipment parcels niya at pinapa-cancel niya shipment. Eh ang nangyari dito, consummated na iyong crime. May intent ka na napinalabas mo, kinonceal mo pa. So ang ginawa pinusasan na kaagad siya; ininquest kaagad,” said Major Jaybee Raul Cometa from BOC.

(He was withdrawing the two shipments. He was cancelling the shipment. But the crime has been consummated already. He showed intent to conceal, so he was immediately handcuffed.)

Alfonso was arrested for failing to present required documents from the PNP.

The BOC has filed complaints before the Pasay City Prosecutor’s Office against Alfonso for violating RA 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act of 2016.

He also violated RA 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

Alfonso was able to post bail on Monday. The case hearing is scheduled to begin on May 22.

Cometa said, the 21-year old is willing to cooperate and divulge whoever his boss is.

“Actually this is already the third shipment. So we are really monitoring this case,” he added.

The BOC warns people involved illegal importation of contrabands.

“Huwag po tayo mag-attempt na magpuslit ng mga iligal na mga baril, ng droga kasi definitely talaga nakikita ng mga Customs iyan lalo nasa x-ray, kita sa image iyan,” Cometa said.

(Let’s not attempt to import illegal guns or drugs because these will definitely be seen by the customs officer especially since it will undergo According to the Bureau this is not the first time that someone attempted to smuggle firearms out of the country. This is why the agency is tightening the monitoring of ports, airports and even warehouses and postal centers. — Aiko Miguel | UNTV News & Rescue
