Senator sees nothing wrong with United States extending help in Marawi siege
Bayan Muna Partylist Representative Carlos Zarate wants to Congress to investigate the participation of the United States in the military operations of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) against the Maute terrorist group in Marawi City.
In a resolution filed by the lawmaker, he claims that some sectors are asking if the US government knew in advance the attack of the Maute group on Marawi City and did nothing about it as a form of revenge to President Rodrigo Duterte’s critical pronouncements against Washington.
Zarate also said it is alarming that the President as the Commander in Chief was not aware that Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and AFP Chief of Staff Eduardo Año asked help from the United States.
However, Senator JV Ejercito sees nothing wrong with the US providing support to Philippine troops.
“It’s all the world leaders’ problem, this is an international problem. We no longer know where they will strike. So if countries will cooperate like in this case, the United States, we welcome it. Obviously they have far superior equipment,” Sen. JV Ejercito said.
Ejercito also noted that the participation of the US in the military operations of the Philippines is limited to intelligence and technical support only.
In line with this, the senator said they are also monitoring the situation in Mindanao, particularly Marawi City, under the military rule.
“We will see after 60 days, if the situation does not improve, we will assess. I want another briefing from the security officials and the end officials to determine the real situation in case we need to extend,” Ejercito added. – Nel Maribojoc | UNTV News and Rescue
