MANILA, Philippines — The Sandiganbayan 6th Division has issued an arrest warrant against Davao del Norte Rep. Antonio “Tony Boy” Floirendo in connection with a graft case filed against him.
It was his political opponent, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, who filed the graft charges in 2017.
The case stems from the allegedly anomalous contract entered into by the Tagum Agricultural Development Company, Inc. (Tadeco) and the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) in Davao del Norte way back in 1969.
The Floirendo family owns Tadeco.
After 25 years, the said contract was renewed while Floirendo is the incumbent representative of the province.
Speaker Alvazez initially argued that the Constitution prohibits lawmakers from entering a direct or indirect business in any contract entered into by the government.
In a statement, Floirendo said that the filing of charges against him before the Sandiganbayan and the issuance of an arrest warrant shows the clear abuse of power by the House speaker.
Floirendo stands firm that the said deal is legal since it provides livelihood to thousands of BuCor inmates and for their families as well.
Speaker Alvarez, meanwhile, responded to Floirendo’s statement: “Dapat mag-concentrate siya sa defense niya sa Sandiganbayan. Dapat doon na siya mag-focus hindi na kung ano pa ang sinsabi [niya].”
(He should concentrate on his defense in the Sandiganbayan instead of saying whatever.)
