Keira Knightley struggled to find remedy for 'really bad' skin

Actress Keira Knightley struggled to maintain a clear complexion until she eased up on her skincare routine.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star dealt with severe breakouts early in her film career and exhausted several treatment methods before learning the best remedy was to leave her skin alone.

"I had really bad skin until I was 24 and up until then I did everything under the sun to it," she revealed to Vogue UK "Then one day I thought I would try to leave it and that's what suited it better."

The 32-year-old's discovery has affected her makeup routine ever since, leading her to use few cosmetics when she's not on either a film set or a red carpet.

"That's also why I always want to wear as little make-up as possible when I am not working," she shared. "When I'm filming, I always have a breakout as we have to cake the make-up on. I think it (my skin) needs a break every now and again to be able to breathe."

The brunette beauty has adopted the same approach when it comes to her eyebrows.

"Really early on in my career a make-up artist said to me, 'You will always be able to know if someone is a good makeup artist because if they tell you to pluck your brows, run a million miles," she recalled. "I have always stuck to that."

Knightley trusted the advice in part because she has had her own experiences with botched brow treatments.

"When I was 21, I did one of those LA brow treatments and it looked awful," she laughs. "The proportions of my face didn't work at all with less of a brow, so I am very glad they grew back!"
