MANILA, Philippines —Forty-eight boxes of whitening and beauty products were seized by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
According to BOC-NAIA district collector Atty. Vincent Maronilla, the products were declared as personal effects.
The BOC, however, was suspicious of the content of the large bulk of packages and had them X-rayed.
“Ang allowed is ₱150,000 per balikbayan box. Kung ganito, hindi na po masasabing personal effects at obviously commercial yung quantity,” said the district collector.
(The maximum amount allowed for tax exemption is ₱150,000 per balikbayan box. If it’s like this, it can’t be considered personal effects anymore. The quantity is obviously for commercial purposes.)
The products which amounted to more than P8-million reportedly belongs to a certain James Halasan from Bangkok, Thailand.
BOC commissioner Isidro Lapeña said that the said products from Bangkok will be further examined.
“This will be subjected to further examination and we will see if baka ito ay mga (these are possibly) fake products,” said the customs chief.
Halasan is now facing a charge of violating Section 1400 of the Republic Act 10863 for misdeclaration of goods.
The BOC added that the said beauty products will be destroyed after being examined. — Rajel Adora | UNTV News & Rescue
