Yara Shahidi credits her Grown-ish character with helping her to develop her own quirky style.
The actress is fast becoming a style icon thanks to her cool but comfortable ensembles and is renowned for putting together outfits that feature clashing prints, colours and textures.
Now, Yara has shared that playing Zoey on the ABC sitcom has given her the confidence to make bold fashion choices.
"I think I started mixing prints on set because of Zoey, since she always does it," she explained to E! Online. "After that, I wanted to incorporate this into my everyday life. My stylist Jason (Bolden) does a great job at putting these together, but again, it's all about finding that balance and what feels good to you."
The 18-year-old added that she always asks "Why am I doing this?" when she's getting dressed, in order to ensure she's "being fun, vibrant and enjoyable" as opposed to merely following the crowd.
She also looks to the real world for clothing inspiration and keeps a selection of ideas on her mobile phone.
"I have a binder on my phone called 'my aesthetic' and it's a combination of colour swatches, archive photos, music video references-you name it," the television star detailed, adding that singer Solange is her biggest real-life style icon. "I just love her. She is one of those people, who no matter what she wears, it feels so 'Solange.' She can be wearing yarn, or a tree like in her music video, but it still feels so her and so right, and it really doesn't matter."
When it comes to standing out from the crowd, Yara has an unusual beauty trick too.
"I'm famous for only painting one nail," she smiled. "I love having colour on my nails but when I'm on set it's difficult to match, so I'll just paint one of my nails."
