Fisherman killed in dynamite accident in Zamboanga

ZAMBOANGA — An improvised dynamite accidentally exploded off Alicia, Zamboanga Sibugay on Saturday, killing a fisherman and two others aboard their motorized boat.
Police Superintendent Rogelio Alabata, spokesman of Police Regional Office 9 (PRO), identified the fatality as Kasim Marjuki. The two injured victims were Abubasar Jammang, 45, and Arab Pala Asmad, 55. All are residents of Barangay Litayon.
Police investigation disclosed that the victims were on a fishing venture when Marjuki accidentally ignited one of the improvised dynamites they used for blast fishing.
The police said the blast triggered the other improvised dynamites killing Marjuki on the spot.
The blast also totally damaged the motorized pumpboat of the victims.
Alabata said the two injured fishermen were taken to Alicia District Hospital for treatment while Marjuki's remains were turned over to his family.

Blast or dynamite fishing has been outlawed in many parts of the world, as the practice has been found destructive to marine ecosystems and habitat where fishes grow.
