Former Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) general manager Rosario Uriarte, a co-accused in the plunder case against former president and now Deputy Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, has asked the Sandiganbayan to allow her to be placed under house arrest.

In a 13-page omnibus motion filed before the Sandiganbayan First Division yesterday, Uriarte’s lawyer, Ray Montri Santos, also asked the anti-graft court that she be allowed to post bail after recent medical tests showed she has a breast tumor.

She also asked the court to allow her to be confined at home for nine to 10 months, the prescribed treatment period for “chemotherapy followed by surgery, and then adjuvant therapy with hormonal treatment and possibly, radiotherapy.”

Santos also cited the Supreme Court ruling allowing former senator Juan Ponce Enrile to post bail for humanitarian reasons.

The former president was set free last July after the Supreme Court junked her remaining plunder case for insufficiency of evidence connecting her to the alleged misuse of PCSO funds. – Rhodina Villanueva
