Lions, Pirates face off anew for PCCL title

MANILA, Philippines — San Beda and Lyceum of the Philippines University relive their NCAA rivalry as they dispute the 2018 Phl Collegiate Champions League crown today at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.

The Lions edged the Ateneo Eagles, the reigning UAAP champions, in a thrilling 57-52 victory to forge a one-game showdown with the Pirates, who downed the San Sebastian Stags, 82-69, in their side of the semis last Monday.

San Beda is seeking a repeat of its two-game sweep of LPU in last year’s NCAA finals.

But the Pirates are raring to get back at the Red Lions and make up for their failed bid to complete a record NCAA title run after a sweep of the double-round elims.

“We know LPU is motivated to get back at us, we just have to be ready and hopefully come out the winners again,” said San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez.

Main man Robert Bolick, however, is a doubtful starter for San Beda with a knee injury.

Bolick had an MRI Tuesday.

With Bolick out, Javee Mocon and NCAA Finals MVP Donald Tankoua stepped up big, combining for all of San Beda’s 20 fourth quarter points. They finished with 21 and 15 points, respectively, to help power the Lions past the Tab Baldwin-mentored Eagles.
