Skippers rip AMA 5 in PBA D-League opener
Kris Porter of Go for Gold pulls off a tough jumper against Earvin Mendoza and Martin Delfinado of Batangas-EAC during the opener of the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena.
MANILA, Philippines — Marinerong Pilipino lived up to pre-tournament hype, blasting AMA Online Education with a 95-83 victory at the start of the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena yesterday.
The Skippers unleashed a huge 31-point explosion in the second period as they raced to a 49-30 bulge then fended off the Titans in the fourth to cruise to a 12-point victory on a squad built around the core of the Technological Institute of the Philippines.
Jorey Napoles turned in a 25-point, 15-rebound effort with five shot blocks while Trevis Jackson backed him up with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists. Franky Jackson also scored 14 points for Marinero, one of the teams tipped to contend for the conference crown.
“They practically know each other so we didn’t have to adjust. What we have is a solid team,” said Marinero coach Koy Banal.
The Skippers, then backstopped by UST aces, lost to eventual champions Zarks Burgers-Lyceum in the semifinal round of the recent Aspirants’ Cup.
But with key TIP players at the helm, Marinerong Pilipino this time hopes to earn a crack at the championship.
In the other game, Go for Gold drew 18 points from James Martinez as the Scratchers rolled to an 88-75 victory over the Batangas Generals.
Ron Dennison added 10 markers and five rebounds, Gab Banal chipped in nine points and hauled down 12 boards while Jerwin Gaco hit nine points and grabbed eight rebounds for Go for Gold, which pulled away at 63-47 after three quarters.
