Eagles smother Generals to stay unscathed at 7-0
MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo primed up for the next round as it crushed Emilio Aguinaldo College, 108-44, to stretch its unbeaten run to seven while Perpetual Help stunned University of the East, 95-75, in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan yesterday.
Matt Nieto shot 14 points while Jolo Mendoza added 13 markers and Adrian Wong and Mike Nieto scored 10 points each for the Eagles, who led by as many as 66 on a Jawaun White triple with 50 seconds left in the contest.
“We didn’t come out and say we wanted to lead by as much or blow out an opponent,” said Ateneo assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga. “We just wanted to run our offense. While we feel bad for an opponent, we are in a process of learning new sets and plays.”
Vincent Robin scored 12 points for the Generals, who fell to 0-6.
In other result, Far Eastern U bucked a late charge by San Sebastian and pulled off a 78-66 victory.
Meanwhile, the Altas surprised the Warriors with a big 20-point victory as the former pounced on the latter’s listless start and sustained their charge the rest of the way to nail their first win in six matches.
UE actually looked headed for a follow up to its 78-74 reversal of National U but struggled against Perpetual and fell by 11 points early on.
The Warriors fell to 3-5.
