MANILA, Philippines — Rain or Shine warded off Blackwater last night, 104-94, and moved on top of the standings heading into the closing stage of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup elimination round.

The Elasto Painters moved up to 7-1 and continued to amaze head coach Caloy Garcia.

“I did not expect this,” said Garcia inside the pressroom of the Smart Araneta Coliseum after the Elasto Painters notched their fourth win in a row.

“Usually (at this stage), we’re at 4-3 or so,” said Garcia.

Rain or Shine is assured of a spot in the quarterfinals but remains focused on one of the top two spots and the hefty twice-to-beat advantage.

The Elasto Painters have three more games in the elims against Phoenix, Meralco and Talk N Text. Blackwater fell to 1-8 and is fading out of the picture.

In the other game, Meralco went through overtime to beat Phoenix, 103-100, and boost its quarterfinals drive with a 5-2 record. Phoenix slipped to 3-4.

“I told my players before the game that this was going to be a tough game. And we got exactly what we expected tonight,” said coach Norman Black.
