Eagles smother Cardinals, face Archers next

MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo primed up for its Independence Day match with La Salle on Tuesday as it clobbered Mapua, 99-55, to complete an eight-game sweep of the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup elims at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan last night.

Cote D’Ivoire exchange student Angelo Kouame posted a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds in only 16 minutes of play while Raffy Verano added 12 markers and Thirdy Ravena and Adrian Wong chipped in 11 points apiece as the Blue Eagles led from start to finish en route to their 44-point romp.

Eric Jabel and Laurenz Victoria scored 12 points each for the Cardinals, who fell to their third straight loss after sweeping their first four games.

The Eagles and the Archers face-off on June 12 in a match also held as a fund-raiser for long-time tournament barker Rolly Manlapaz, according to the organizing Filoil Flying V.

Earlier, Edward Dixon canned in two pressure-packed free throws in the last 12 seconds in overtime to lift St. Benilde to an 89-88 victory over Letran.
