Davao, Zamboanga stun Luzon foes
MANILA, Philippines — Mindanao teams churned out impressive starts in the MPBL Datu Cup with the Davao Occidental toppling Cavite, 75-71, and Zamboanga repulsing Laguna, 86-80, in Biñan, Laguna late Thursday.
Billy Robles, Mark Yee, Leo Najorda and Bogs Raymundo took charge for the Davao Tigers while the rest backed them up with a gritty defense to thwart the Cavite side.
Robles shot 15 points and fell a rebound short of a double-double while Yee and Najorda combined for 25 markers and Raymundo chipped in 10 points.
Davao Occidental primed up for its league debut by topping a four-team tournament in Polomolok, South Cotabato last month.
The Tigers also clamped down on Imus top gun Ian Melencio and held Andre Paras scoreless in 12 minutes of play.
Zamboanga leaned on Reed Juntilla’s 30-point explosion to repel the host squad. Jonathan Parreno also sizzled with 18 markers for the Zambo cagers.
