Pirates target playoff crack at twice-to-beat vs Cards
MANILA, Philippines — Lyceum of the Philippines University guns for at least a playoff for a twice-to-beat advantage as it clashes with also-ran Mapua today in the 94th NCAA basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Already assured of a spot in the Final Four following a 113-79 demolition of the Arellano U Chiefs Thursday, the Pirates (13-1) press bid for the all-important Final Four incentive as they tangle with the Cardinals (4-10) at 4 p.m.
LPU has become a little bit more inspired after being denied a potential sweep on an 81-83 defeat to Perpetual Help a week ago.
The Pirates vented their ire on the hapless Chiefs, shattering a lot of statistical records in their game – most points scored (113), most three-pointers made (14), most assists (27), most fast break points (34) and most bench points (81).
And LPU hopes to carry that impressive form against Mapua.
“We have to be inspired and show improvement every game because we will not be able to reach our goals if we don’t,” said LPU coach Topex Robinson.
Arellano University also fights for its Final Four aspiration as it mixes up with Emilio Aguinaldo College at 2 p.m.
The Chiefs sport a 4-9 record, and a loss would send it out of the Final Four race. The Generals have long been out with a 3-11 mark.
